Agribusiness and the clean energy that the sector is able to generate, even by using waste from its own production, will play a decisive role in the decarbonization agenda of the Brazilian economy, according to speakers at a panel on clean energy generation during the Estadio Agro Summit. Estadão Summit Agroheld on November 8 in São Paulo at the Masp auditorium.
Among the various segments represented on the panel was that of palm oilwhich is produced from the plant of the same name and is used, among numerous applications, as a biofuel. "If the country covers 30 million hectares with palm oil, it could replace the use of 1.1 billion barrels of oil per year," said the CEO of the Brasil Biofuels group, Milton Steagall, whose company works with biodiesel made from palm oil.
He said, however, that today Brazil is a "trace" in the production of this biofuel in the world. "We have 75,000 hectares planted with palm and a unit that will produce SAF (sustainable aviation fuel)," he said, adding that the palm segment already has land zoning, but needs incentives to expand. "We can create more sustainable jobs in the Amazon."
The zoning determined that there are 35 million hectares in the country that can be planted with oil palm, an area equivalent to the total areas of competing countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, Steagall explained.
